Der Fantasy- und Science-Fiction-Autor Leland Exton Modesitt, Jr. wurde am 19. Oktober 1943 in Denver, Colorado geboren. Er studierte am Williams College in Massachusetts. Er verdiente sein Geld mit zahlreichen Berufen wie Pilot, Leibwächter, Lieferbote, Disc-Jockey, Immobilienmakler, Marktforschungsanalytiker und Assistent eines Kongressabgeordneten. Er lebte lange Zeit in Washington, D.C. 1989 zog er nach New Hampshire und seit 1993 lebt er mit seiner Frau in Cedar, Utah. L. E. Modesitt war insgesamt dreimal verheiratet und ist Vater von sechs Töchtern und zwei Söhnen.
